Islanders Could Be Paying More for IWMC Services

December 3, 2019, 12:09pm

Islanders could soon be hit with additional costs after an application by the Island Waste Management Corporation for rate increases, says Liberal Transportation critic Robert Henderson.

“I was a little surprised to see an application by IWMC for rate increases. Those increases hit Island home owners, businesses and cottage owners”.

“The proposed increases are as high as 21%. Given the state of the provincial finances, why is IWMC pursuing higher rates when they’ve had modest profits in previous years?”

The provinces Island Waste Management Corporation has applied to the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission to increase home collection rates from $205.00 to $213.00 and cottage collection rates from $95.00 to $115.00. If approved, these increases would take effect in 2020.

“Affordability is a major issue in our province”, said Liberal MLA Henderson. “We know that the Conservative Government decided to get rid of free drivers licenses and voluntary identification, and now one of its crown corporations is looking for a major fee increase”.
