Reading together to build healthy relationships
Education, Early Learning and Culture
A recent book donation will help families foster healthy relationships by learning and reading together, says Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie.
“The annual book donation to libraries from the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention recognizes Family Violence Prevention Week and includes books in three languages for libraries across the province,” said Minister Currie. “Reading together as a family can improve literacy in children, and can also lead to important discussions about the importance of caring relationships and peaceful conflict resolution.”
This year's picture books show children how to express affection and love in healthy ways, as well as how to spread peace and kindness throughout their communities. The titles for young adults tell the stories of teens dealing with unhealthy relationships and struggling to make better choices.
“Family activities like reading books together can help demonstrate to our children different ways people can spread kindness, peace and love in their families and their communities,” said Minister of Family and Human Services, Tina Mundy. “I encourage all Islanders to learn more about family violence not only during Family Violence Prevention Week, but year round. It is important for all Islanders to recognize that everyone has a role to play to support healthy relationships and help end family violence in Prince Edward Island.”
