PEI Liberals Remain Well Ahead

  • PEI Liberals remain the preferred party by a comfortable margin
  • Majority of Islanders are satisfied with the performance of the provincial government
  • Premier Wade MacLauchlan remains the preferred party leader

The Prince Edward Island (PEI) Liberals continue to enjoy a wide lead over other provincial parties, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. Specifically, six in ten decided voters support the PEI Liberal Party this quarter (58%, compared with 61% in February 2016), while backing for the Progressive Conservative Party stands at 20 percent (compared with 19%). Under one in ten support the New Democratic Party (7%, compared with 9%), while one in six prefer the Green Party (16%, compared with 11%).

One in six Islanders are undecided (16%, compared with 19%), while four percent refuse to state a preference (compared with 6%), and five percent either support none of the parties or do not plan to vote (compared with 2%).

With regards to government satisfaction, two-thirds of PEI residents (64%, compared with 71% three months ago) are satisfied. Meanwhile three in ten (30%, up from 20%) are dissatisfied, while the number of residents who do not offer a definite opinion stands at six percent (compared with 8%).

In terms of leader preference, four in ten PEI residents offer their support for Premier Wade MacLauchlan this quarter (38%, compared with 41% in February 2016). Meanwhile, preference for interim leader Jamie Fox of the PC Party is stable this quarter (13%, unchanged), while support for Peter Bevan-Baker of the Green Party rests at 27 percent (compared with 22%), and seven percent (compared with 10%) back Mike Redmond of the NDP. Meanwhile, six percent (compared with 3%) prefer none of these leaders, while one in ten (9%, compared with 10%) are undecided or do not offer an opinion.

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 300 adult Prince Edward Islanders, conducted May 6 to May 30, 2016 with overall results accurate to within ± 5.7 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
