Tourism indicators in June show a great start to a successful 2016 tourism season in Prince Edward Island, says Minister Heath MacDonald, Economic Development and Tourism.

“It’s very encouraging to hear from tourism operators that their bookings continue to increase year over year,” said Minister MacDonald. “Tourists continue to be excited about Prince Edward Island and all that we have to offer. From our festivals and events, to our beaches, golf courses, parks, sightseeing activities, and more, Prince Edward Island proves to be an exciting destination.”

Total overnight stays in June were at the highest level since 2005, increasing by 9.8 per cent compared with 2015; specifically Prince Edward Island saw an increase of 9.7% in overnight stays by Ontario visitors and 28.7 per cent by Quebec visitors compared to the same time last year. Overnight stays by United States visitors also saw major increases, with a 15.8 per cent increase from June 2015. Additionally, room nights sold are up 9.3 per cent from this time last year, while campground site nights sold are also up by 10.4 per cent from last June. This encouraging trend depicts that visitors are staying a little while longer on Prince Edward Island.

The Confederation Bridge and the Charlottetown Airport saw significant increases in traffic compared to June of last year. Bridge traffic was up by 8.9 per cent, while airport traffic was up 15.0 per cent.

“We are so thankful for our tourism operators across Prince Edward Island. They are some of the most dedicated individuals who have a true passion for promoting PEI and providing top quality service and Island-famous hospitality to all visitors,” said Minister MacDonald. “Our tourism industry would not be nearly as successful if it were not for these dedicated operators who ensure that visitors get the most out of their PEI experience.”

“We are very enlightened by the positive impact of the tourism occupancy results,” said Kevin Mouflier, CEO of TIAPEI. “While speaking to operators across the Island, it is extremely evident going forth that our numbers are pacing well ahead of last year.”
